Breed Spotlight: The Poodle

Poodles have been a recognized formal dog breed for centuries, however, with a prominent dispute, experts still debate whether the breed is decedents from a German type of water dog or the French Barbet. Poodles became a historical European dog breed favorite for their intelligence, hunting capabilities, and expert protection of owners. They are so much more than the girly dog breed that we make them out to be!

Did you know that poodles are only second to border collies in intelligence? That’s right! Poodles are an exceptionally smart breed of dog. They are known for their abilities to perform in agility, obedience, tracking to herding, circus performers or becoming assistance dogs. Because of this, and their inherit gracefulness, poodles are among the favorite breeds of AKC dog shows.

The poodle’s luxurious curly coat is a favorite for creative dog groomers. There are hundreds of different styling techniques and cuts that are utilized to decorate this breed. Because their coat is more similar to human hair than fur that other dog breeds have, stylists will sometimes dye poodle coats different colors for fun! Want your dog to look like a zebra? No problem!

Poodles come in 5 different sizes: teacup, toy, medium, standard and royal. Standard poodles stand 15 to 21 inches at the shoulder and weigh 45 to 65 pounds. In comparison, royal poodles can stand 20 to 28 inches at the shoulder, and weigh a whopping 80 to 90 pounds – around the same weight as a Bernese mountain dog!

Poodles are known as one of the pickiest eating dog breeds out there. They tend to have sensitive stomachs and prefer higher quality food. I’d say that doesn’t help their stereotype of being the prissiest dog around! Because of their dietary needs, it’s important to avoid fillers such as corn or rice. They require more meat and vegetable based meals. Many have had good success with raw dog feeding. Give it a shot in your My Pet Pail dog feeder if you are experiencing trouble feeding your poodle.

Did you know that poodles are lounge dogs? They don’t typically enjoy playing fetch or tug-a-war. They would much rather go for a nice walk or run and then snuggle with you on the couch.
