The American Shorthair breed originated with early North American settlers who brought cats from Europe to help protect cargo from rodents. Later, in the early 20th century, the cat know today as the American Shorthair was bred to have certain characteristics. The American Shorthair is a bred working cat having a American Shorthairthick coat to protect it against the elements. Most Female American Shorthairs can weigh between 5-10lbs while males may weigh between 10-15lbs. The American Shorthair is considered a medium sized cat having a lifespan of up to 20 years. With their classic feline appearance, these cats are highly sought after.

The American Shorthair has an excellent temperament. They are gentle and friendly, which make this cat a perfect addition to your family. American Shorthair’s have been described as affectionate and tend to quickly make connections with their humans. This cat is extremely easy going and loves to play. The American Shorthair can make a toy or game out of anything. You’ll often find them entertaining themselves with a string, chair leg, or even a shadow. This breed is very playful and will appreciate you spending time playing together.

The American Shorthair is a very healthy breed. This breed generally has no genetic issues and will live a long, happy life. The biggest problem that can face an American Shorthair cat is the likelihood of obesity. If your cat is inactive, you may need to adjust their food or switch to a new cat food.
