Pet Grooming - Bath Time

Brushing. Brushing your pet is one of the easiest things your can do for your pet. It’s important to brush your pet a minimum of three times a week to help them shed excess fur and remove dead skin. Make sure your brush, or comb, reaches all the way to your pets’ skin for best results. It’s important to be gentle in this process since you don’t want to damage their skin or cause them stress. Brushing is one of the best things you can do to bond with your pet; they know you are taking care of them and are eternally grateful.

Teeth. It’s important to routinely brush your pets’ teeth. If left unattended, your pets’ mouth could become riddled with plaque and bacteria which can lead to a whole host of health problems. Your pet may take some time to get used to teeth brushing but you can start out in small increments of time, slowly working your way up. It’s vital you use only pet approved toothpastes, homemade or store bought.

Regular baths. The best way to keep your pet clean is with regular baths. You must remember to use shampoos and conditioners that are specifically made for your pet to avoid any excessive dryness or irritation. Use positive reinforcement during the bath and after to reassure your pet. Always make sure the bath temperature is not to cold or hot, and once done dry off your pet. Your pet will enjoy this time getting pampered.

Nails. Clipping your pets’ nails can be difficult to be sure. They generally don’t like you touching and handling their paws so it presents an even greater challenge. The best way to clip nails is to hold your pets’ paw firmly, but gently. Then you’ll want to clip just a small amount on the end of each nail. Make sure you have good, sharp clippers or the nails may split and break. It’s important to avoid cutting your pets quick, but if you do, don’t panic. Your pet will bleed and be extremely unhappy but you can treat them by applying pressure with a warm damp cloth and using styptic powder.

Inspection. Make sure to inspect your pet for lesions, bumps, hot spots, and dry or scaly skin. Treating these areas before they become unmanageable is extremely important. If left unattended, such things could lead to irritations, causing your pet to chew or scratch at them. Your pet may even end up with an infection. It’s also a good idea to inspect your dog or cat’s ears regularly. You’ll want to check for ear mites or any redness or discoloration. If you notice an abnormal odor, or your pet itching their ears frequently, they may have an infection. It’s best to seek the advice of your veterinarian for the best course of treatment.
