Pets need good dental care, same as their people. Taking care of your pet’s teeth will help lead to longer, healthier and happier lives. If left neglected, your pets poor dental hygiene could lead to serious, irreversible health problems. Here are some things to remember when it comes to pet dental care.

Brush daily. Yes, this is a pain, but is so necessary for your pet’s dental and overall health. The simple act of brushing your dog or cats’ teeth for a minute a day. Your pet may be opposed to this idea at first but after a few weeks of the routine, and will some positive Pet Dental Healthreinforcement, they will adapt. You’ll want to make sure to use a toothpaste approved for pet use, no human toothpastes. There are also several safe homemade toothpastes that are fine for pets. Again, consult your vet about the right choice for your pet.

Inspect teeth. Take a good look at your pet’s teeth and gums. Be aware of early warning signs such as bleeding gums, yellowing teeth, loose teeth or ever excessive itching or scratching at their mouths. These could all be early indications your pet’s dental health is diminished. If you suspect your dog or cat may have a serious dental issue, always consult your veterinarian.

Give your pet dental treats or toys. This should only be in addition to and not as a supplement for brushing your pets’ teeth. Pet dental toys can be very effective in reducing tartar and plaque buildup on your dog or cats’ teeth. There are a variety of pet dental treats and toys to choose from so always make sure the one you choose has the VOHC seal of approval. If in doubt, consult your veterinarian.

Don’t ignore bad breath! If your pet’s breath is unbearable, it may actually be a warning. Bad breath could not only be an indication of gum disease but also of more severe medical problems. In some cases, bad breath can be and indicator of respiratory problems, abdominal issues, or even signs of organ failure. Please consult your veterinarian if your pet has persistent, untreatable halitosis.
